![]() It's the easy and cheap way to do thing so it'll probably continue for the foreseeable future, though I'm not convinced we're actually getting more narrative content as a result. It makes sense in these instances and does a good job of setting the tone. That said, I do find it to be an effective means of exposition, such as the introductions to each of the Archaeology digsites. Because if that quest was released today, that's certainly how they would have done it. Imagine if, at the end of The World Wakes, instead of seeing Sliske actually kill Guthix, we cut to a voiceover explaining that it happened. You could see your character reacting to things that were going on, or getting involved themselves. Runescape's cutscenes have never exactly been high-fidelity, I know, but at least they felt like you were a part of the adventure. ![]() It's like I'm hearing about it second-hand, rather than actually being a part of it, making the entire thing fall flat. To me, it feels incredibly immersion breaking and takes me out of the story. However, seeing it in action from DT up until the Battle of the Monolith, I've felt thoroughly underwhelmed every time we cut to one of these cutscenes. Save development time on cutscenes that will only be seen once, in theory allowing for quicker paced narrative content to be released. The idea is simple and the benefits are obvious. Starting with Desperate Times, Jagex introduced the artwork-cutscene style in a big way, opting to use it to cover exposition and grand moments that would surely take more effort to visualize with the ingame models.
