It's the easy and cheap way to do thing so it'll probably continue for the foreseeable future, though I'm not convinced we're actually getting more narrative content as a result. It makes sense in these instances and does a good job of setting the tone. That said, I do find it to be an effective means of exposition, such as the introductions to each of the Archaeology digsites. Because if that quest was released today, that's certainly how they would have done it. Imagine if, at the end of The World Wakes, instead of seeing Sliske actually kill Guthix, we cut to a voiceover explaining that it happened. You could see your character reacting to things that were going on, or getting involved themselves. Runescape's cutscenes have never exactly been high-fidelity, I know, but at least they felt like you were a part of the adventure. It's like I'm hearing about it second-hand, rather than actually being a part of it, making the entire thing fall flat. To me, it feels incredibly immersion breaking and takes me out of the story. However, seeing it in action from DT up until the Battle of the Monolith, I've felt thoroughly underwhelmed every time we cut to one of these cutscenes. The artwork is usually lovely too, which is definitely a positive. Save development time on cutscenes that will only be seen once, in theory allowing for quicker paced narrative content to be released. The idea is simple and the benefits are obvious. Starting with Desperate Times, Jagex introduced the artwork-cutscene style in a big way, opting to use it to cover exposition and grand moments that would surely take more effort to visualize with the ingame models. At the time, the reasons for the Attorney-General to drop the case were murky. Within half an hour, the case was dropped because the prosecution declined to offer evidence. The case came to court on 25 February 2004. Among them were Reverend Jesse Jackson, Daniel Ellsberg (the US government official who leaked the Pentagon Papers), and Congressman Dennis Kucinich. Her case became a cause célèbre among activists, and many people stepped forward to urge the government to drop the case. On 13 November 2003, she was charged with an offence under section 1 of the Official Secrets Act 1989. While waiting to hear whether she would be charged, she embarked on a postgraduate degree course in global ethics at the University of Birmingham. She spent a night in police custody, and eight months later was charged with breaking the Official Secrets Act. In a BBC interview with Jeremy Paxman, she said that she had not raised the matter with staff counsellors as she "honestly didn't think that would have had any practical effect". Less than a week after the Observer story, on Wednesday 5 March, she confessed to her line manager at GCHQ that she had leaked the email, and was arrested. She heard no more of the email, and had all but forgotten it until Sunday 2 March, when she saw it reproduced on the front page of The Observer newspaper. In February, she travelled to London to take part in the demonstration against the impending invasion of Iraq. After contemplating the email over the weekend, she gave it to a friend who was acquainted with journalists. Outraged by the email, she took a printed copy of it home. The plan might have contravened Articles 22 and 27 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which regulates global diplomacy. These were the six "swing nations" on the UN Security Council that could determine whether the UN approved the invasion of Iraq. Koza's email requested aid in a secret operation to bug the United Nations offices of six nations: Angola, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Chile, Guinea and Pakistan. While at work at GCHQ on 31 January 2003, she read an email from Frank Koza, the chief of staff at the "regional targets" division of the American signals intelligence agency, the National Security Agency. Her regular job at GCHQ in Cheltenham was to translate Mandarin Chinese into English. She was previously unaware of GCHQ, and later said, "I didn't have much idea about what they did.I was going into it pretty much blind. She left teaching in 1999, and after some temporary jobs, finding it difficult to find work as a linguist, she applied to GCHQ in 2001 after reading a newspaper advertisement for the organisation. She graduated with an upper second-class degree, then took a job as an assistant English teacher with the JET program in Hiroshima, Japan. In 1993 she began studying Japanese and Chinese at Durham University. Her upbringing later led her to describe herself as a " third culture kid". Īfter spending her childhood in Taiwan, where she attended Morrison Academy until age 16, she returned to Britain to study for her A-levels at Moira House School, a girls' boarding school in Eastbourne. She has a younger brother who teaches in Taiwan. Her father studied Chinese at Durham University and now teaches at Tunghai University in the city of Taichung, central Taiwan. Katherine moved to Taiwan in 1977 with her parents, Paul and Jan Harwood. In 2003, she leaked top-secret information to The Observer concerning a request by the United States for compromising intelligence on diplomats from member states of the 2003 United Nations Security Council, who were due to vote on a second UN resolution on the prospective 2003 invasion of Iraq. Katharine Teresa Gun ( née Harwood born 1974) is a British linguist who worked as a translator for the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ). Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) If you're thinking that's a lot to read and just want a summary of how well the AI actually did at this task, thankfully, Swayne shared some highlights with us. Heads up, they are exactly as long as you expect a book in that series to be. You can read ChatGPT's version of The Winds of Winter right here, and A Dream of Spring here. And finally, he used those extended outlines as prompts to ask ChatGPT to write the chapters themselves, turning every bullet point of the outline into its own scene. From there, he fed those outlines back into ChatGPT and asked it for more detailed outlines of the same chapters. Then, he repeated that over and over to create 45 total chapters. Speaking to IGN, Swayne explains that he guided ChatGPT to writing the books through a series of prompts: First he gave ChatGPT a single prompt to generate an outline for the first chapter of The Winds of Winter. Independent developer Liam Swayne published a project today where he used ChatGPT to write the remaining two books in the Song of Ice and Fire series: The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. But don't expect it to replace Martin anytime soon, either. It’s rare to find a built-in automation system within a game like Forager, which makes this a really unique feature. And the AI did.well, not too bad. If it uses all of the ore then it will simply stop creating items until more is available. So if a furnace is set up to create gold, then as long as gold ore is being gathered it will keep creating gold ingots. What this really means is that a structure will constantly create that item so long as the resources needed are collected. All of the inventories can be connected through skills and all of the crafting structures can be setup to create an “infinite” amount of an item. The crafting system that is built into the game also has built-in automation. These will fill in water spaces and connect islands to each other, thus providing more room for building. It’s still fun to use though and one of the best features is the ability to create landfills. It has enough content where the islands can be customized to fit a style but it’s not the most expansive of building systems. On top of that there are decorative items to spruce up the place and all of the structures that get unlocked during the skill progression both look good and serve an important function. There are a decent number of options for building: to set up a base there are different varieties of floors, walls, and gates. The second is that items don’t despawn, so if storage space becomes an issue it’s always possible to leave the items on the ground and come back for them later.įorager has a lot more to offer than just gathering resources though. That in turn means the only reason not to collect items is because there is something else to do. The first is that there is no item stack limit, which means it’s possible to have literally thousands of the same item. There are actually two great features in Forager that make scavenging fun. Another convenient trick is that each structure will drop the resources it was built with, which means it’s possible to keep rebuilding the market until it has a certain item in stock.īut in the event that this sounds a bit too tedious it’s always possible to just keep grinding for levels by gathering resources. Early in the skill tree it is possible to unlock markets which will cycle new items every ten minutes, and it’s possible to build multiple markets, each with their own items. Thankfully there is a bit of a workaround for this situation. No go forth, dress up, and have a totally awesome October 31st! PLoS Biol 21(8):Īcademic Editor: Anna Akhmanova, Utrecht University, NETHERLANDS Furthermore, functional replacement of endogenous Miro with Split-Miro identifies its essential role in the regulation of locomotor activity in adult flies, demonstrating the feasibility of tuning animal behaviour by real-time loss of protein function.Ĭitation: Mattedi F, Lloyd-Morris E, Hirth F, Vagnoni A (2023) Optogenetic cleavage of the Miro GTPase reveals the direct consequences of real-time loss of function in Drosophila. In adult fly neurons in vivo, Split-Miro photocleavage affects both mitochondrial trafficking and neuronal activity. While Split-Miro overexpression is sufficient to augment mitochondrial motility, sustained photocleavage shows that Split-Miro is surprisingly dispensable to maintain elevated mitochondrial processivity. Unexpectedly, this treatment did not impact the ability of mitochondria to buffer calcium or their association with the endoplasmic reticulum. Rapid optogenetic cleavage of Split-Miro leads to a striking rearrangement of the mitochondrial network, which is mediated by mitochondrial interaction with the microtubules. To address this issue, we have developed an optogenetic loss of function “Split-Miro” allele for precise control of Miro-dependent mitochondrial functions in Drosophila. It is not clear, however, how Miro proteins spatially and temporally integrate their function as acute disruption of protein function has not been performed. Miro GTPases control mitochondrial morphology, calcium homeostasis, and regulate mitochondrial distribution by mediating their attachment to the kinesin and dynein motor complex. It’s about a man who was dared to stay the night in a haunted castle. The artwork will seem familiar to fans of Alvin Schwartz. You miss out on the full experience if you never hear the stories performed by someone your own age.Įsteban and the Ghost - Sibyl Hancock, illustrated by Dirk Zimmer (1983) As a kid, you get caught up in the illustrations because they’re so garish, so unlike anything you’ve ever seen. I’m glad I heard these stories from a friend (in a dark, dark closet) before reading them, or seeing Gammell’s unbelievable illustrations. The tales are short and memorable, and Schwartz gives tips on how the stories should be performed. Since Maria Leach’s The Thing at the Foot of the Bed, no other author had attempted to encourage storytelling in kids. Schwartz is known as a modern folklore populist for good reason. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark - Alvin Schwartz, illustrated by Stephen Gammell (1981) I guess creepy babies in coffins is a harder sell in the 21st Century. My boys regularly borrow it from our local library, though the newest version is missing Gammell’s drawings. I remember it fondly in my elementary school library in the early ’90s. It is one of the Eerie Series - nonfiction books describing historical encounters with ghosts, monsters, and aliens. Ghosts - Seymour Simon, illustrated by Stephen Gammell (1976) “Precious Bodily Fluids” and “The Vrolak” are fun stories with fantastic illustrations. Most curiously, the introduction to this book was written by Robert Bloch (best known for writing Psycho) and it certainly feels like it could have been the inspiration for each of Alvin Schwartz’s introductions in the Scary Stories series. Monster Tales and its 1974 sequel Horror Tales read more like The Hardy Boys meet The Brothers Grimm. Monster Tales - edited by Roger Elwood, illustrated by Franz Altschuler (1973) It features many of the same urban legends he would go on to include in his books - specifically, a cemetery dare, ghostly hitchhikers, body parts falling down chimneys, departed souls seeking lost possessions, and even a killer in the back seat. This book was a touchstone for Alvin Schwartz in writing his Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series. The Thing at the Foot of the Bed and Other Scary Tales - Maria Leach, illustrated by Kurt Werth (1959) ġ.4 In some specific circumstances, it also applies to children, their carers and to young carers when they are subject to transition assessments (see chapter 16 on transition to adult care and support). It applies equally to adults with care and support needs and their carers. For this reason it is referred to throughout this guidance. This may sometimes be referred to as ‘the wellbeing principle’ because it is a guiding principle that puts wellbeing at the heart of care and support.ġ.3 The wellbeing principle applies in all cases where a local authority is carrying out a care and support function, or making a decision, in relation to a person. Underpinning all of these individual ‘care and support functions’ (that is, any process, activity or broader responsibility that the local authority performs) is the need to ensure that doing so focuses on the needs and goals of the person concerned.ġ.2 Local authorities must promote wellbeing when carrying out any of their care and support functions in respect of a person. Throughout this guidance document, the different chapters set out how a local authority should go about performing its care and support responsibilities. This chapter provides guidance on section 1 of the Care Act 2014 and covers:ġ.1 The core purpose of adult care and support is to help people to achieve the outcomes that matter to them in their life. Managing provider failure and other service interruptions 1. Market shaping and commissioning of adult care and support 5. Preventing, reducing or delaying needs 3. General responsibilities and universal servicesġ. You have an option to print the entire Care Act guidance (approximately 375 pages) or select a page range.
